The Catamaran took us to a port called Mae Nam. First impressions of the place wasn’t great. The place was dead although it did look nice.
We took a “taxi” to the nearest bungalows - the taxi was a moped each which proved to be a scary way around the dirt roads going out of the port, especially when you have a rucksack on your back!
That evening we went onto the main strip where we went to some bars. All around the area were German bars and restaurants which seemed a bit strange but I suppose they have to go somewhere! Some of the bars were dodgy, it was our first experience of “bar girls”. Bar girls are hookers who hang around trying to entice “farangs” (racist Thai term for foreigners) into the bars. We didn’t have much choice but to go into one of these bars as there were bar girls everywhere and we needed beer! There were a lot of 40-60yr old perverts in there with prostitutes so shortly after we went back to the safety of our bungalow but not before being groped by fat ugly prossies trying to get us to go with them! Scary.
We didn’t really like the place so we went south the next day to a beach called Hat Lamai. We stayed in a place called New Hut which turned out to be a place where most backpackers go.
It was cheap but pretty cool. Our next door neighbours were two Aussies called Steve and Tempo. They were pretty funny and a good laugh. We decided that night to go to a club several miles away with 2 canadians and an english guy we met. Steve gave me and Josh a lift which was a disaster. I can see now why mopeds aren’t designed for 3 people. We went into a ditch and later Josh fell off the back scraping his arms and legs. Oh well.
22nd Jan - after spending several days drinking and messing about in the sun, we decided to do something productive. I’d read up on a waterfall not too far from where we were staying so me Al and Josh went up there to have a look. The 10km walk took us nearly 4 and a half hours but it was worth it
